Who will win the 2018 World Cup?

Tite’s Brazil are joint-favourites @ 6.00 (5/1) along with Germany to lift the World Cup in Russia this summer. We’ll outline why we feel the five-time World Champions should be feared this summer and why their price represents great value.

New Management

Former Corinthians coach Tite has transformed the Seleção since taking the reins in June of last year.

His competitive record with the National team reads: Won 10, Drawn 2, and lost none. What’s even more impressive though is the remarkable goal difference during his tenure. Brazil scored 30 and conceded just three since he took charge in June 2016.

It’s also worth noting that Brazil breezed past some of the best teams in South America during qualification with a 3-0 win over Argentina (#4), 4-1 win over Uruguay (#22), and a 3-0 win over Chile (#10).

Squad:

Goalkeepers:

Unlike recent years Brazil will be coming into this tournament with two elite Goalkeepers in Alisson Becker (Roma) and Ederson (Man City) The GK position has usually been a weak area for the Seleção, but not this year both GK’s have been nothing short of phenomenal this season for their clubs.

Defence:

Brazil’s defence performed admirably during qualification, and we should expect a solid backline consisting of Dani Alves, Marquinhos, Miranda, and Marcelo. Thiago Santos is also another option at CB.

Midfield:

Casemiro (Real Madrid) Paulinho (Barcelona) Coutinho (Barcelona) Fernandinho (Man City) Willian (Chelsea) and Renato Augusto (Beijing) means there will be no shortage of options to reinforce their midfield.

Strikers:

Unlike the last World Cup Brazil will have a lot of different options for their lead striker, This was a massive problem in 2014 with the likes of Fred and Jô leading the line. Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus, Neymar, Douglas Costa, and Willian Jose just some of the options available.

During qualification, Brazil had five players who were involved in more than six goals (Goals + Assists) Neymar, Coutinho, Paulinho, Jesus, and Willian. Not being so heavily reliant on Neymar coming into this tournament will only benefit them.

Group stage:

With a group containing Switzerland, Serbia, and Costa Rica we can expect the Brazilians to finish top of their group. Once they finish Top of their group, we see a clear path to the final for them. Something which should look something like this…. R16 (Mexico or Sweden) Quarters (England or Belgium) Semi-Final (France or Uruguay) and then either Germany or Argentina in the Final.

Key Factors:

  • In the last 6 World Cups, Brazil have won twice, came runner-up once, reached the semi’s once, and the quarterfinals twice. No other country comes close to these levels of consistency over the past two and half decades.
  • Brazil are the only South American team to have won a World Cup on European soil and to have won three more away from South America (Japan/Korea, Mexico, and the USA)

Verdict: In short, this is an exciting time for the Seleção , and there’s not a significant weight on the shoulders like there was at home in 2014. Expect them to go deep in this tournament and banish the ghosts of the 7-1 thrashing from Germany last time out. In our opinion  Brazil’s odds here should be closer to 4.00 (3/1) Take advantage of the generous price while you can.
