Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

Euro 2016 is almost upon us and a lot of you are probably looking for value in a usually unpredictable market. In the following article we’ll assess the front runners plus some dark-horses that we fancy.

These are a few questions you should be asking yourself before placing your Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Bets.

  1. Will my players team progress from the Group stage (Top Goalscorers are usually from teams that make it to at least the Semi-Finals)
  2. Is my player the 1st choice penalty taker for their country?
  3. What’s his International goalscoring record like?
  4. How good of a domestic season did he have?
  5. What was his Goals to minutes ratio during qualification?

Below we answer these questions for the front runners.

Collage of football players

Cristiano Ronaldo | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 125 Games 56 Goals

Domestic Season: 47 Games 51 Goals

1st choice Penalty taker: Yes

Qualification Goals per minute: Ronaldo scored on average every 108 minutes.

Verdict: Ronaldo is a predictable favourite for this market. He has a decent Games/Goals ratio, and will take Portugal’s penalties and Free Kicks. Portugal will face Austria, Iceland and Hungary all of whom are reasonable good at the back.

We don’t expect Portugal to progress that far in the tournament so we cannot recommend betting on the market favourte.

Thomas Müller | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 70 Games, 31 Goals

Domestic Season: 48 Games, 32 Goals

1st choice Penalty taker: Yes

Qualification Goals per minute: Muller scored on average every 89 minutes.

Verdict: Germany didn’t impress in qualification as it appeared they were suffering from a World Cup “Hangover” however we expect them to progress deep into the Tournament reaching at least the Semi-Finals.

Looking at Germany’s squad it’s hard to look past Muller for Top Goalscorer. Germany’s other Attacking threats aren’t on the same level. We recommend taking Muller 8/1 (9.00)

Antoine Griezmann | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 26 Games, 7 Goals

Domestic Season: 53 Games, 32 Goals

1st choice Penalty taker: 50/50

Qualification Goals per minute: N/A (France are hosting)

Verdict: France have a wealth of Talent in their squad and although Griezmann should start we can’t be guaranteed he’ll get as many minutes as we like. Also we feel Simeone’s tactics get the most out of Griezmann’s talents.

It’s unlikely in our eyes that he replicates what he’s done at club level this year. Avoid backing Griezmann at 11.00(10/1) It represents poor value in our eyes.

Robert Lewandowski | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 75 Games, 34 Goals

Domestic Season: 51 Games, 44 Goals

1st choice Penalty taker: 50/50 Blaszczykowski prefered.

Qualification Goals per minute: Lewandowski scored on average every 67 minutes (Top Qualification Goalscorer)

Verdict: It’s 50/50 that Poland progress from their group (Germany, Northern Ireland, & Ukraine) and even then we don’t expect them to progress deep into the tournament. For that reason we cannot advise backing Lewandowski at 17.00 (16/1)

Harry Kane | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 10 Games, 4 Goals

Domestic Season: 49 Games, 28 Goals

1st choice Penalty taker: No

Qualification Goals per minute: Kane scored on average every 77 minutes during qualification

Verdict: England should progress to at least the Quarter-finals and we’re fairly confident Kane will be spearheading England attack. Harry Kane to be Top Goalscorer at 17.00(16/1) represents decent value considering England’s relatively easy group  (Russia, Slovakia, & Wales)

Olivier Giroud | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 46 Games, 14 Goals

Domestic Season: 53 Games, 23 Goals

Qualification Goals per minute: N/A (France Host)

1st choice Penalty taker: 50/50 Greizmann prefered

Verdict: it’s unlikely Giroud will be regular starter in the France team considering the other players fighting for a start ( Martial, Griezmann, Coman). Also Giroud’s scoring record for France and Arsenal is very inconsistent.

Romelu Lukaku | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 43 Games, 12 Goals.

Domestic Season: 46 Games, 25 Goals.

1st choice Penalty taker: No

Qualification Goals per minute: Lukaku played 5 games and scored 0 during qualification.

Verdict: Although Belgium should at least reach the Quarter Finals we cannot advise backing Romelu, Belgium aren’t big goalscorers and don’t rely on him for goals. You should also note that Hazard, De Bruyne and Fellaini were Belgium’s Top Goalscorers in qualification.

Alvaro Morata | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 8 Games, 1 Goal.

Domestic Season: 46 Games, 11 Goals.

1st choice Penalty taker: No.

Qualification Goals per minute: 198 minutes played. ZERO goals scored.

Verdict: At only 25/1 Morata also represents really poor value in our eye’s. He’s had a disappointing season for Juventus and he’s not tested at this level of international competition.

Anthony Martial | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 8 Games, 0 Goals.

Domestic Season: 51 Games, 17 Goals.

1st choice Penalty taker: No

Qualification Goals per minute: N/A (France Host).

Verdict: Martial has been Man Utd’s saviour this season, but we simply cannot advise betting on someone who has never scored for their country.

Marc Janko | Euro 2016 Top Goalscorer Tips

International Record: 56 Games, 26 Goals.

Domestic Season: 34 Games, 21 Goals.

1st choice Penalty taker: No

Qualification: Janko scored on average every 96 minutes during qualification.

Verdict: Janko ticks all the boxes for us, and with an easy group we’re expecting them to at least reach the quarter finals.

Austria are not to be overlooked in this tournament, they were near flawless in qualification and were scoring on average 2.2 Goals per game (6th highest).
