Champions League Tips

After bringing you a host of Anytime Goalscorer winners last weekend, We’re back with some more free Champions League Tips from the midweek games

Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

Thomas Muller Champions League Tips

Robert Lewandowski is the favourite in the goalscorer market when Juventus entertain Bayern, but one man who deserves a mention is Thomas Muller. One of the most talented players in world football, yet has often surprisingly gone under the radar. Muller is the definition of consistency, and has been for years. 24 goals to his name in just 26 appearances, Muller should not be underestimated. His partner in crime, Lewandowski, does have 32 in just 29 appearances, but the records are clearly similar and considering Muller plays in behind the big Pole, perhaps his record is the most impressive.

Lets talk goals per minute (GPM), Muller is operating at an impressive GPM of 87.45. This suggests he will score practically every game, but of course playing a side like Juventus means goals are less likely for Bayern. Guardiola’s side have won their last 3 meetings with Juventus, and have scored 2 or more in all 3, there is no reason this trend cannot continue, and if Bayern do in fact score twice, I would expect Muller to be involved. The German is also the penalty taker for Bayern, should the German champions receive a spot kick. A price of 3.50 with Unibet has to be taken, and taken early. Unibet have a unique policy which allows us to risk backing players early. If the selected player does not start the match, Unibet void the selection, and stake is returned. We can play safe in this sense, and take an early price which is sure to drop as the event nears.

Luis Suarez (Barcelona)

Luis Surez - Champions League tips

Luis Suarez has been even better than expected at Barcelona since moving from Liverpool 2 years ago. The 3 pronged attack of Neymar, Messi and Suarez are untouchable in world football, and it is truly a rarity for a side to deny all 3 in 90 minutes of football. Messi is the favourite in the AGS market for Barcelona’s trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal. Should he be? Probably not, yes Messi was recently crowned the Ballon D’or winner, and yes he has an unbelievable scoring record, but Suarez is the man scoring the most goals at this time. Messi generally plays wide right of the 3 now for Barca, with Neymar on the left and Suarez the point of the attack. Messi also tends to drop deep to collect the ball, you won’t see that from Suarez, he will always be trying to get in behind the defence. On this basis, expect Suarez to get more clear cut opportunities.

Messi does take more shots, he averages 4.9 per game compared to Suarez’s 3.7. However, most of Messi’s strikes tend to come from outside the area, and he also takes the free kicks. In no way am I suggesting Messi will not score, but I side with Suarez in this one, who has netted 15 times in his last 10 games. I expect Barcelona to score at least twice at Arsenal, and with Suarez scoring every 63.7 minutes this season, don’t be shocked to see him on the scoresheet.

Andriy Yarmolenko (Dynamo Kiev)

 Andriy Yarmolenko Champions League Tips

Kiev along with Gent are the underdogs of the competition, not much is expected of either side and understandably so given the other competitors in the UCL. However, Kiev are a more than formidable side especially at home in Ukraine. They welcome Manchester City on Wednesday, and I’m surprised to see Kiev priced at 3.50 with City such a short price of 2.20. Man City are not exactly consistent this season, and they are certainly nothing amazing away from home, not even domestically.

Kiev didn’t lose at home in the group stages, they drew 2-2 with Porto, 0-0 with Chelsea (who beat City 5-1 at the weekend, albeit a weak City side) and won 1-0 against Tel Aviv. In the last 2 years, only Shaktar Donetsk have won at Kiev, for another side, you would have to go back to February 2014 when Valencia won 2-0. I’m not here to discuss match odds however, so onto potential goal scorers. Unsurprisingly given the match odds, City’s strikers are the favourites; Aguero and Iheanacho are both less than 3.00.

Considering I think Kiev will be a tougher nut to crack than many expect, City players don’t represent value in my eyes. The favourite for Kiev to net, is the much talked about Andriy Yarmolenko. Strongly linked with Everton, this will be Yarmolenko’s last season in Ukraine, he is Dynamo’s talisman.  10 goals in 20 appearances suggests Yarmolenko is a 1 in 2 man, but the quality of the Ukrainian league skews this data when we are operating in a UCL market. He does however, have 2 goals in 378 minutes of UCL action this season, scoring against Porto and Tel Aviv. City welcome back Vincent Kompany which is certainly a boost for them defensively, but they are still breachable and for that reason I think Yarmolenko is a good option at 3.90. He is also the club penalty taker, which is always an advantage.
